Introducing the Slayer

Hey everyone, this Friday, I bring to you The Slayer.

Mind you this is the first draft, so it is lacking the full description as far as flavor and back story, but what you need to know is that this class is essentially my take on assassins and beast slayers. These guys are concerned with one thing, and that is bringing an end to their target. To save you guys from being overloaded I have included only two of the five archetypes. In the next draft I will add more to it.

I hope you enjoy this class, and I look forward to your feedback.

You can find the Slayer class here.

See you on Wednesday, as we discuss the Unearthed Arcana series and how to use it in next week's article: Buried in Novelty.

Friday, I hope to get the first draft of the Duelist out to you guys.

Til then, happy gaming!

  1. First things first: I enjoy the class. I like the roguish feel with a martial focus. But, it gets Dex and con saves: don't you normally only get 1 of the main 3? And I worry about someone dipping a level of fighter for the archery fighting style and having a +9 to hit at level 2. All in all pretty cool.

    1. Levi, that may be worth investigating as far as the saving throws. In a bound accuracy system, that may be less of a problem. Any fighter with archery as a fighting style could have a +8 to hit alone, so in this supposed nightmare scenario, we're looking at a +10. However, the slayer fills a new role, against weaker foes he's a terror. However, against larger foes that are ready for him, he does as much damage as a ranger with no spells and no favored enemy bonus, unless he has advantage. When we play tested slayer, Chris had to be very careful how he used the class in larger combats, but he was a great crowd controller, or should I say, lawn mower. Against tougher foes, the slayer needs to hit more consistantly because, until we see the Invisible Blade, he has a reduced access to his burst damage.

    2. A couple build suggestions, high elves who can get access to true strike because of the free cantrip, drow using faerie fire, kobold's (Volo's guide) pack tactics, and more are great racial buffs to slayers.

Choosing feats that give more damage options or utility are great choices for the slayer. Great Weapon Master (should you wield the appropriate weapon) and Sharpshooter are great damage mod feats that work great with slayer.

Multiclassing, I dare say Rogue and Fighter are good choices, Ranger as well. Paladins of Vengeance make interesting slayers as well.

      Experiment and share your results!

  2. Predator+Sneaky Goliath= The most brutal hired killer. I once tried to figure out a build for this using a rogue but a Goliath with finesse weapons kills it. Love how any kind of weapon is compatible with this class.
